ABOUT THE FOUNDER & THE COMPANY

Mathematician.
Data Engineer.
Occasional Trampoline Artist.

Equilibrium Industries was founded in Grand Junction, Colorado by Tyler A. Downing — an applied mathematician with two decades of healthcare data experience, a lifelong fascination with code, and a soft spot for retro text adventures.

The Professional Story

Tyler is an applied mathematician and Certified Professional Medical Coder (CPC) with a two-decade history of healthcare data work spanning reporting, analytics, modeling, and business intelligence. His career has touched virtually every corner of the healthcare data ecosystem — healthcare payers, physician's groups, specialist clinics, managed care organizations, state and federal healthcare agencies, laboratories, and hospitals.

His combined background in mathematics and healthcare operations has driven a body of work in healthcare reporting, analytics, and modeling — including the development and calibration of mathematical models to forecast healthcare costs, utilization, and risk.

The Path Here

Late 1980s

The TRS-80

Self-taught BASIC on a Radio Shack TRS-80, and got hooked on early text-based adventure games — a fascination that would eventually resurface in the most unexpected way.

1990s — 2000s

Object-Oriented Programming

Moved into Visual Basic and C++, building a programming foundation that would later carry into professional database and analytics work.

Detour

Circo Zero, San Francisco

Performed for several years as an accomplished tumbler and trampoline artist with Circo Zero in San Francisco. Not the most common entry on a mathematician's resume, but it remains one of the more memorable.

2005 — 2010

Colorado Mesa University

Double majored in Applied Mathematics and Theater/Dance. Senior project: modeling the salinity of the Colorado River using curve fitting techniques and differential equations.

2010 — Present

Two Decades in Healthcare Data

Built a SQL based data career spanning healthcare payers, physician's groups, specialist clinics, managed care organizations, government agencies, laboratories, and hospitals. Modeling cost, utilization, risk — and learning where the data goes wrong.

Why Equilibrium Industries

Equilibrium Industries was founded by Tyler to provide a professional home for a growing set of work that didn't fit neatly anywhere else — including database application projects done for the local Independent Physician Association and the local Housing Authority.

The company name reflects what Tyler believes good data work should produce: balanced, defensible answers in the middle of complex, often contradictory information.

The current Equilibrium Industries statistical tool was born from a recurring frustration: watching incorrect evaluations of how data moves — without the statistical lens needed to interpret it properly. The Statistical Significance Tool is a direct response to that gap, built for everyday analysts and decision-makers who need rigor without needing a statistics degree.

Equilibrium Industries is also currently developing an administrative health data textbook drawing on Tyler's two decades of operational experience — expected to be available in the near future.

The Exigency Story

Equilibrium Industries also serves as the publisher of Exigency, a retro text-based adventure game that has been a five-year passion project of Tyler's. The goal was simple, if slightly unhinged: build an advanced, professional-grade interactive narrative game using only GW-BASIC — A dialect of the language Tyler first learned on that TRS-80 in the 1980s.

The game is wrapped in PC-BASIC and Python for modern distribution, but the gameplay logic itself runs on the original engine. The result is a deeply nostalgic experience with surprising depth: four full story paths, dense world-building, and the unmistakable feel of an old text adventure rebuilt for the present moment.

Humor Belongs in Data

Tyler is a firm believer that humor belongs in data work and programming whenever possible. Spreadsheets are not required to be joyless.
