You are the most important mathematician
alive in a world that no longer has governments.
Two letters just arrived on your desk.
Whatever is in those letters will define the rest of your life. You have not opened them yet.
EXIGENCY is a keyboard-only text adventure set in 2055 — a world rebuilt from the ruins of civilization by those with the power to do so, and the ruthlessness to keep it.
// THE WORLD OF 2055
The year is 2055. Political and religious divisions have fractured the Earth to the point that all governments and diplomatic relationships have dissolved. These dire circumstances fostered several catastrophic world wars. No strong nations remain. Many civilizations have been completely exterminated.
What survived the collapse was not peace. It was vacancy — a silence where nations used to be, filled slowly and deliberately by those who moved fastest into the wreckage.
// THE POWERS THAT REMAIN
The Order of Oversight
OOOIn the ashes of the fallout, a new global entity known as the Order of Oversight has been rapidly expanding and asserting itself as the new world authority. Comprised of surviving politicians, diplomats, and military generals, the OOO is populating new model cities with citizens who pledge their allegiance in exchange for protection, housing, and work.
Amongst the model cities, they have implemented a new world currency called the Ombit (Ω) and maintain control over education and the news bureau. Imprisoned members of society were relocated to work camps, though many escaped to join the outlaw citizens who refuse to align with the OOO's new societies.
Conglomerate A
CONGAPieces of several former utility and technology companies were combined to create Conglomerate A — CONGA. It is the only remaining private industry, dependent on its sole contract with the OOO to provide power, water, and communications systems to the model cities and work camps.
CONGA is also contracted to conduct research and development of technologies used to expand the OOO's current galactic operations — including housing and maintaining the space ports and space pods used for Order of Oversight space exploration and mining operations.
The Diplomatic Operations Zone
THE OPS ZONEThe OOO has granted CONGA diplomatic status and an independent region to operate within — branded the Diplomatic Operations Zone, or Ops Zone. It consists of a majority of the former Southwest United States and is free from OOO regulations and oversight.
The Ops Zone contains CONGA research facilities, factories, utilities, and community areas for employee housing and entertainment. A series of space ports in the region serve travel and transfer of resources between Earth and galactic sites. CONGA researchers and administrators possess passports granting the ability to live and travel within the Ops Zone and access the space ports.
The Outlaws & Sympathizers
THE OUTLAWSThe development of model cities and work camps by the Order of Oversight has cultivated bands of peaceful citizen outlaws that reject the OOO's authority. Their camps are hidden throughout unpatrolled areas of the Ops Zone to avoid interference from the OOO.
They survive on resourcefulness, deals with sympathizers, and illegal underground businesses. Many CONGA leaders sympathize with the outlaws and broker deals to exchange water and other necessities. Outlaw citizens caught in the Ops Zone are sent to work camps — which has led to growing outlaw vigilante attacks on model cities. Outlaws highly value the old American Dollar as their currency.
// TECHNOLOGY, ADVANCES & GROWING FEARS
There have been numerous reports that CONGA continues to make impressive advancements in galactic technologies due, in part, to mathematical research efforts. With heavier galactic travel, there are growing concerns amongst the population that the OOO and CONGA have been in contact with space beings and are concealing it from the general public.
These fears have spiked as recent UFO sightings have been noted near CONGA space ports. Multiple accounts of contact with other galactic entities are surfacing from within the bands of outlaws. Further rumors speculate that the new global currency, the Ombit (Ω), may in fact be a galactic currency.
The future of the Earth remains unknown.
// THE STORY BEGINS
We find you in your research office within the Diplomatic Operations Zone outside of old Las Vegas.
As a leading applied mathematician, before the world collapse, your work was pivotal in developing the first methodologies for capturing and transmitting high levels of static electricity over long distances. After the collapse, you were recruited by CONGA as a mathematician and granted an Ops Zone passport.
Your latest research effort is anticipated to be the next promising breakthrough needed to advance the OOO's latest plans for galactic operations.
You are preparing to submit your final findings.
You have just received two letters that look to be of great importance.
_
The game begins here. On this desk. With those two letters. What happens next — and who you become — is entirely up to you.
// FOUR PATHS. FOUR LIVES. ONE ORIGIN.
The opening chapters of EXIGENCY are shared by every player. The world is introduced. The stakes are established. The letters are opened. Then a choice arrives — and the game fractures into four completely distinct stories, each with its own arc, characters, endings, and secrets.
Each path is a complete game. Coming back for a second path is not grinding — it is a genuinely different story.
INDUSTRIAL
The machinery of the Ops Zone never stopped running. CONGA's infrastructure spans continents and reaches into space. Someone has to keep it running. Someone has to understand what it is running for.
MILITARY
The Order has forces. CONGA has interests. The outlaws have nothing to lose. In a world without nations, allegiance is not a loyalty — it is a calculation.
DIPLOMATIC
The model cities are stable. The Ops Zone is sovereign. The galactic operations are expanding. None of these things are as compatible as they currently appear. Someone needs to navigate what comes next.
SURVIVAL
The margins of the Ops Zone hide more than outlaws. Getting out was never the hard part. The hard part is what you find when you do — and what finds you.
// ON DEATH & OUTCOMES
EXIGENCY does not protect you from your choices. There are many ways to die. Some are quick. Some give you time to understand what went wrong. A handful of outcomes sit outside the ordinary categories of success and failure — and finding them requires paying attention to parts of the world that most players treat as background.
You have been warned.

// KEYBOARD ONLY. BY DESIGN.
EXIGENCY is built in GW-BASIC — the programming language of the early personal computer era — and delivered as a self-contained executable that runs on modern hardware. The interface is entirely text. There is no mouse support. There are no clickable elements.
You type. The world responds.
This is not a limitation. The keyboard-only constraint is the aesthetic — a deliberate echo of the machines that first made this kind of storytelling possible, rebuilt for a story set in a future where the past came back in ways no one anticipated.
If you have never played a text adventure, this is a good place to start. If you have, you will feel immediately at home — and immediately surprised.
> READY TO OPEN THE LETTERS?
The Ops Zone is waiting. The letters are on your desk. Whatever is in them has already set things in motion.
